Senate Committee Passes IMLS Reauthorization

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee today passed legislation—S. 3984, the Museum and Library Services Act of 2010—to reauthorize the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The nomination of Susan Hildreth to be the new Director of IMLS was also approved by the committee. Both S. 3984 and the nomination of Hildreth next move to the full Senate for approval.

The bipartisan bill includes several provisions proposed by the museum field, including enhanced support for conservation and preservation, emergency preparedness and response, and building statewide capacity. The bill specifically supports efforts at the State level to leverage museum resources, including statewide needs assessments and the development of State plans to improve and maximize museum services through the State.

"This is a huge step forward for our field," said AAM President Ford W. Bell. "It is a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together.  We must continue to build on this momentum by contacting our Senators NOW and asking for their vote on the Senate floor."

Send a letter to your Senator TODAY asking them to co-sponsor the Museum and Library Services Act, S. 3984, and to vote for the bill when it is considered by the full Senate. It is uncertain whether a vote will take place prior to the close of the 111th Session of Congress, so it is important for us to weigh in with our support for this legislation now.

If your Senator sits on the Senate HELP Committee , please thank him or her today for their support of S. 3984. You can call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Senator's office.
