Museum Funding Increase Advances in the U.S. Senate

A key U.S. Senate committee voted yesterday to support legislation increasing funding for the IMLS Office of Museum Services (OMS). The proposal includes a total of $31.3 million for OMS in Fiscal Year 2014, more than it has received in either of the last two years. This progress comes on the heels of dedicated advocacy efforts by the museum field that resulted, among other things, in a record 24 Senators signing a letter in support of OMS funding.

“The proposed funding increase makes it clear that our message is resonating in the halls of Congress,” said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. “This important step for our field could never happen without dedicated museum advocates, and this increase will never get across the finish line without your continued work.”

The immediate outlook for this legislation is unclear, as Congress continues to grapple with larger budget disagreements. As negotiations continue, it is critical that legislators hear from their constituents about the economic and educational benefits that museums bring to their communities.
