Advocacy Alert: July 19
Sign Your Museum On to Save the Charitable Deduction
Recently, two powerful Senators indicated their plans to make fundamental changes to the tax code. Their process for writing the legislation is simple: every tax break—including the charitable deduction—is eliminated unless it is found worthy. They are seeking input to determine which provisions should be kept and which should be cast aside. With charitable donations accounting for more than one-third of museums’ operating funds, our field cannot afford to lose this vital incentive.
During this critical moment, we hope your museum or organization will join the Alliance in signing a letter from the entire nonprofit community in support of the charitable deduction. Organized by Independent Sector, a leading network of nonprofits, the letter will be sent to every Senator so it is important that museums nationwide are included.
The deadline for your organization to sign is Wednesday, July 24 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
"Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Orrin Hatch have made it clear that when it comes to tax reform, everything is on the table," said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. "I urge all museums to join the larger nonprofit sector in going on record to save the charitable deduction. Signing on to this letter is a great way to do just that."
Please add your museum’s name to the letter today.
P.S. The letter to Congress also mentions two additional tax provisions that have little effect on museums but are important to the broader nonprofit sector. They are not controversial in Congress and have been extended multiple times.
