Advocacy Alert: March 12

Will Your Senators Support the IMLS Office of Museum Services?

With a similar effort underway in the House of Representatives, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is now circulating a letter urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to provide robust funding in FY 2016 for the Office of Museum Services (OMS) at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Signing on to the Gillibrand letter is your U.S. Senators’ opportunity to go on record in support of this funding.

Join the cause: ask your Senators to sign on today.

“Our work at Museums Advocacy Day and our advocacy efforts in the House of Representatives have already led to some new signatories this year,” said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. “Now we must also make the case in the Senate; these Congressional sign-on letters are a critical way to show support for museum funding. We are grateful to Senator Gillibrand for her leadership, and now your Senators need to hear from you.”

The Office of Museum Services is currently receiving $30.1 million, well below its authorized level of $38.6 million (as approved by Public Law 111-340). Partly as a result, many highly reviewed grant proposals go unfunded every year due to lack of funding by Congress.

The deadline to sign the Gillibrand letter is March 23. Please take one minute today to ask your Senators to sign

And if you haven’t yet done so, please ask your Representative to sign the House version of this letter before its March 18 deadline. Find more details about this letter in our most recent advocacy alert.
