Advocacy Alert: Nov. 19

Major Decisions Loom in Congress; Will Museums Be at the Table?

As you read this, Congress is actively considering major legislation that will decide funding for federal cultural agencies, tax breaks for charitable donations, and education policy.

Are they thinking about museums?

What is Museums Advocacy Day and why you should attend. Since it began in 2009, Museums Advocacy Day has led to fantastic unexpected success stories such as museums being nominated for national awards, hosting legislative events, securing federal grants and testifying at local Congressional hearings.

Here are 3 ways to support the cause!

1.   Register Now

  • Members of Co-Convenor, Leader and Partner organizations (Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Association of Science Museum Directors, Western Museums Association, Association of Children’s Museums, Virginia Association of Museums, American Public Gardens Association, American Association for State and Local History, Association of Art Museum Directors, Association of Midwest Museums, Association of Tourist Railroads & Railway Museums, California Association of Museums, Council of American Maritime Museums, New England Museum Association and Oklahoma Museums Association) also register for free.

2.   Nominate Your Legislator to be Honored

  • Has your legislator been particularly supportive of the museum field’s legislative agenda or of your individual organization? Nominate him or her (by December 4) by sending us a brief explanation as to why he or she is deserving of this honor. Learn about previous awardees.

3.   Share Powerful Visitor Stories!

  • What is your most powerful visitor story? How has your museum changed someone’s life? You can tell us (by December 4) in your own words, send us a letter you received from a visitor or share a link to a video or photo that captures the story. See this inspiring 5-minute video and the 2015 stories.
EXTRA CREDIT! Museums can make a difference right now by signing on to a nonprofit coalition letter that calls for the renewal of key charitable tax provisions, including the IRA charitable rollover. While an organizational signature is strongest, individuals can also take action by contacting their legislators on this issue.
