Museums Celebrate America's Freedoms:
Joining Communities in a Day of
Remembrance
About Celebrate America's Freedom: A Day of Remembrance
In the summer and fall of 2002 museums across the country responded
to the call by the American Association of Museums and the Institute
of Museum and Library Services to unite with their communities
in remembrance of September 11, 2001. Museums served as gathering
places and forums for remembrance and understanding. This initiative
underscores museums’ roles as stewards of the nation’s
stories and special places where people can gather.
AAM will not be collecting or listing activities, events,
and exhibits of museums observing the second anniversary of
September 11. Museums are welcome to use the resources of
this site if they are planning an anniversary observance with
their community.
Profiles of Participating Museums
Thank you to all the museum staff who submitted information
on their activities, events, exhibits, and ceremonies commemorating
the first anniversary of Sept. 11. The outpouring of notes,
stories, and press releases was overwhelming. These listings
are an account of the positive impact museums made in their
communities during this difficult time.

Museums & Community
Museums that participated in the Day of Remembrance
recognize the value of working with community. Sustaining
our museums in the changing social landscape is not easy or
instantaneous, but we can learn from the successes and failures
of others. AAM has produced two publications, Mastering
Civic Engagement: A Challenge to Museums and A
Museums & Community Toolkit to encourage and help
museum professionals in listening to community voices and
establishing community relationships.

Register for Building
Community Connections seminar to learn how you and your
institution can become more civically engaged and community
conscious. AAM members can read about the seminar in “Cultivating
Community Connections” in the May/June 2003 issue of
Museum News.
