The American Association of Museums and its Board of Directors are strongly committed to addressing issues of diversity in the museum community. The Board's Museums & Community Resolution is an example of this commitment. There is a tremendous opportunity for fully integrating diversity issues into all AAM programs and services. While AAM's financial austerity has slowed this process, we are committed to finding additional resources so that we can focus on meeting the needs of museums in this area and increasing the number of diverse museum professionals.
In November 2003, the AAM Board of Directors named diversity as one of eight strategic issues to guide the direction of the association over the next 12 to 18 months. As part of this commitment, AAM has engaged in several projects to increase the number of diverse professionals in leadership positions in the museum field, and to help museums and their communities understand the many benefits of diversity.
