National Interpretive Planning Colloquium

The National Interpretive Planning Colloquium was held in conjunction with the AAM annual meeting in May of 2005 and organized in collaboration with the AAM Committee on Education (EdCom).  This one-day working session convened museum professionals from all disciplines, museum types, and job functions to identify characteristics of effective interpretive planning, and outline ways in which it may be accomplished.

Participants at the colloquium identified:

  • goals for interpretive planning
  • elements of an interpretive plan that are broadly useful and desirable, or may be needed by museums on a case-by-case basis
  • strategies to surmount the challenges of writing and implementing interpretive plans

The results will be disseminated to the field through AAM materials and used to develop future professional education seminars. The results will also be used by the AAM Accreditation Commission to inform their assessment of interpretive planning in accredited museums. This colloquium is part of AAM’s ongoing role as a venue and catalyst for the exploration of new ideas, and in the identification, analysis, and dissemination of best practices.
