Applying LEED to Museum Projects
Since the LEED green certification launched in the 1990’s, there have been hundreds of museums seeking the certification to demonstrate sustainability practices and to be a good neighbor. Thanks to Deborah Lucking of Fentress Architects and Joyce Lee of IndigoJLD Green + Health and a group of experts, the new and improved guidance is available at the US Green Building Council under “Applying LEED to Museum Projects”. It is a great step in the right direction.

Looking Ahead: Innovations and Actions
The COVID-19 crisis and exacerbated climate conditions around the world have prompted museums to think beyond their traditional role of cultural preservation. This program explores the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the museum DNAs with thought leaders at ICOM Austria. Seventeen museums within the country participated with insights and rigor.
Sustainable Exhibition Design & Construction Toolkit
Don’t Worry about “Perfect.” Work towards “Better.” Few museums have the resources to follow all of these guidelines. Don’t get discouraged or overwhelmed. Start with low-hanging fruit. Learn more with each project and make each project better than the last. These toolkit resources are designed to help you define and improve the sustainability of your exhibitions in the ways that are most important to your community and your institution.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Sustainability and Resiliency for a Better Tomorrow
Endowments: Considering Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) Factors
Endowments are unique to institutions including museums. And today, museums are no longer limited to achieving missions through programming alone. Increasingly, investment committees look to their sizable endowments to affect social change by investing in companies that align with their values. The public and donors are also demanding more transparency from organizations they support. This webinar will address what goes into constructing a portfolio considering environment, social, and governance (ESG) factors and provide you with the background, perspective, and knowledge to begin this conversation in your museum. New tools within the investment industry now allow for a robust and verifiable comparison of social impact investing with traditional investment strategies and approaches. As with Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the corporate sector has also led in ESG reporting. Museum trustees from the corporate world can be quite versed in ESG trends. This vocabulary is invaluable for both museum staff and leadership.

Looking Ahead: Sustainability Adding Value to Reopening
Museums have huge roles to play in helping all imagine and contemplate a sustainable future through engagement. The buildings housing exhibits, interactive displays, and collections also provide major opportunities to address climate action in positive and tangible ways, post COVID-19. On June 24, 2020, leaders from across the museum field convened in partnership with the Environment & Climate Network to share their approaches to sustainability.
Looking Ahead: A year for Action towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The United Nations (UN) Climate Week inspires individuals and organizations to become part of the momentum created by the global climate agreement in Paris. It is a collaborative platform where both governments and non-governmental organizations stakeholders gather to address the gamut of relevant climate issues under one umbrella. This booklet is based on the webinar is co-hosted by the American Alliance of Museums and the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Ki Culture: Missouri History Museum’s sustainability effort
Hear about the journey to green building certifications, energy benchmarking, and waste reduction. This is also a LEED case study of the facility and how deep it touches on many different departments of the museum. Building facility emissions often account for 60-75% of carbon emissions of the institution.
