Statement from AAM President & CEO Laura Lott on the demolition of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s ancestral burial ground

Category: Press Release

The following statement was issued on September 9, 2016.

“The American Alliance of Museums deplores the destruction of cultural heritage and stands outraged at the recent demolition of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s ancestral burial ground. These actions are an affront to the beliefs outlined in the Alliance’s strategic plan and an offense against the shared cultural heritage of the Lakota Nations and all people. The American museum community is committed to working openly and productively with indigenous people for the protection, preservation, and repatriation of culturally sensitive items and property.”
