AAM Statement on the President’s FY27 Budget Proposal

Category: Press Release

The American Alliance of Museums strongly opposes the President’s proposed FY27 budget, which once again calls for the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

These agencies have a proven track record of supporting critical economic growth, fostering community development, and protecting our shared heritage and culture. This proposal is misguided and out of step with the American public and Congress. Museums enjoy overwhelming, bipartisan support with 96% of Americans supporting federal funding for museums. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have consistently recognized the essential role museums play in communities across the country.

Federal investment in museums is not symbolic; it delivers measurable returns. Museums contribute more than $50 billion to the U.S. economy each year and support over 726,000 jobs nationwide. Their impact extends far beyond their walls: for every $100 in economic activity generated by museums, an additional $220 is created across other sectors, from hospitality and tourism to construction, finance, and education. Museums also generate more than $12 billion annually in tax revenue and return more than $5 in tax revenue for every $1 they receive in government funding.

We have seen this proposal before. In prior budget cycles, including FY26, similar efforts to eliminate funding for these agencies were ultimately rejected, thanks to strong bipartisan, bicameral support in Congress and sustained advocacy from the museum community.

That outcome reflects a clear and enduring reality: museums are not optional. They are essential public infrastructure for education, economic vitality, and community well-being.

We are grateful for Congress’ continued leadership in supporting museums through appropriations and urge lawmakers to again fully fund IMLS, NEA, and NEH.

AAM is leading a field-wide sign-on letter to Congressional leadership in support of federal investment for all museums. Add your organization, company, or association to the letter, here.
