Throughout history, amid societal repression, queer individuals found creative ways to express themselves through art, literature, fashion, and even the design of their own homes. Join R. Tripp Evans, Professor of Art History at Wheaton College, and Ken Turino, Senior Search Consultant at Museum Search & Reference, for a tour of the homes, lives, and histories of four New England bachelors whose residences defined American style and interior design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The presentation begins with an overview of the path these sites took to incorporate queer stories into their museums. Then Evans’ will discuss how his book and its associated exhibition, “The Importance of Being Furnished: Four Bachelors at Home,” explores how these four influential men expressed their personal identities through interior design. The exhibition was on display from June to October 2024 at the Eustis Estate in Milton, MA.
