On September 19, 2023, the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, comprised of eight sites in Central and Southern Ohio, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as works of human creative genius and for their eloquent testimony to the brilliance of Indigenous Americans. The sheer scale of these structures, built some 2,000 years ago, along with their meticulous alignments with the movements of the sun and moon, tell the story of a culture with sophisticated knowledge of geometry and astronomy that they build onto the land through earthworks and mounds.
Join Jennifer Aultman and Jerry Dannemiller from the Ohio History Connection to talk through the decade-long process of nominating the site, being awarded inscription last fall, and the vision for developing the sites and their surrounding communities into local, regional, and international attractions.
