How Can We Create an Excellent Volunteer Program?

This Museum magazine article shares an article that addresses key elements of a volunteer program’s infrastructure, including purpose and planning, job design for managers and volunteers, dismissing a volunteer, policies and procedures, and assessment of volunteers and the program. This article is based on the transcript of a 2012 Alliance webinar, Planning or Transforming Your Museum Volunteer Program Infrastructure, in collboaration with AAMV.

Maximizing Mission with Collections Volunteers

The Alliance provides a handout from its 2013 annual meeting, which provides tips for recruiting skilled volunteers, training staff and volunteers to work collaboratively and managing volunteer projects, including sample projects. The resource provides practical ways to incorporate and manage volunteers and the successes and challenges of unpaid help. It also includes samples such as a volunteer education collection assistant job description, a volunteer interest form and an application form.
