Mission and Vision
The Alliance has compiled this set of mission and vision resources from amongst its own offerings as well as those throughout the nonprofit and museum sector.
The Alliance shares a reference guide that aims to help museums develop a mission statement, a core document supporting a museum’s purpose. The guide explains what a mission statement is, why it is important and considerations for developing one. It reflects national standards and is in line with the requirements of the Alliance’s Core Documents Verification and Accreditation programs.
The Alliance shares an exercise that helps museums understand and demonstrate how well staff and governing authority know its mission. The activity is one of many designed by the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) as part of the self-study process. It ranks highly with program participants and has been used in over 2,000 assessments.
This document from the Alliance discusses how a mission statement guides a museum’s activities and the necessary elements of such a statement.
Tier 3 museum members can access a number of sample mission statements.
The Alliance partnered with BoardSource to this discussion guide for museum leaders—especially directors and trustees—to get involved with advocacy. (PDF, 12 pages)
The Free Management Library shares an article that distinguishes between mission, vision and value statements.
