Earth Day 2021 leaped over its 50th anniversary last year and arrives at a moment of hope this year. Many in the cultural arena are contemplating how we build back better. We are joined by two luminaries in the sustainable development field to have a conversation about the planet’s future. Questions: How do we pivot from here? How do we collectively exert positive influence? Can we decide to change, experiment, and be part of our communities’ rebuilding? If you have a chance to read their books beforehand, please do. This will help you reflect on Earth Day (April 22) and be ready for International Museum Day (May 18). Come ready to be inspired.

Jonathan F.P. Rose is the author of The Well-Tempered City: What Modern Science, Ancient Civilizations and Human Nature Teach Us About the Future of Urban Life, was published by Harper Wave in 2016, and won the 2017 PROSE Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work by a Trade Publisher. Henry McGhie has a background as an ecologist, curator, and museum senior manager. He now works as a consultant, and set up Curating Tomorrow in 2019 to support museums and their partners to enhance their contributions to sustainable development and the SDGs, climate action, and biodiversity conservation. He is the author of ‘Museums and the Sustainable Development Goals and ‘Museums and Disaster Risk Reduction’. He is a member of the International Council of Museum (ICOM) Sustainability Working Group and is currently working as part of the team behind Reimagining Museums for Climate Action, leading to an exhibition at Glasgow Science Centre ahead of and during COP26. Henry’s career has involved working at the interfaces of science, policy, public participation, and education, all directed towards achieving positive outcomes for sustainable development. Since 2017, he has collaborated with UN Climate Change and played a key part in the recognition of museums as integral to public education and participation in climate change matters, and their specific inclusion in the Work Programme for the Paris Agreement. Henry also played a part in the ICOM’s adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals as the blueprint for sustainable development activity to 2030.
