Apply to the Museum Assessment Program
Please note: MAP is no longer federally funded by IMLS. However, to continue the impact of this popular and long-running program, AAM will continue to offer both the classic option and some new alternatives for smaller and mid-sized museums interested in self-assessment tools and experiences! Eligibility parameters have also been expanded. See the MAP home page for more information about our adapted and expanded MAP options!
Follow this process to apply to the Museum Assessment Program:
- Confirm your museum is eligible to participate.
- Review MAP costs, process and schedule and ensure your museum has the time, resources, capacity, and buy-in to undertake an assessment.
- Choose your Assessment Type and verify that you meet any special additional eligibility requirements.
- View the sample application and, once ready, begin the application. Applications are due on November 14, 2025. If you have any questions, please reach out to map@aam-us.org.
Want to learn more about MAP? The Insider’s Guide to MAP is an 11-minute recorded presentation covering the details about eligibility requirements, program cost, and the key components of the MAP process. NOTE: this recording was made before the elimination of IMLS funding that fully subsidized participation, so it states that MAP is no-cost. Please reference the fee structure above for the 2026 pricing.

“We are a stronger organization after completing the MAP process, and we continue to benefit from more effective communication with museum stakeholders… With a fresh sense of purpose, the board of directors has spearheaded efforts to build an acquisitions endowment that will sustainably expand the collection in the future.”
